He was born in Berlin in 1910 and enlisted 1928 in zoology and human medicine in Humboldt University in Berlin. He immigrated to Palestine in 1933 and wrote a thesis on the “Population density of Birds in Israel” in 1940. He was the founder of modern zoology in Israel and became the most important zoologist in the Middle East. He helped build the university in Tel Aviv and taught there until the year 2000.

I met him in that same year and earned his cooperation for APUSlife. He also became a sponsor of the Common Swift website and we planned the common project “Common Swifts at the Wailing Wall” which was done in 2002. Prof. Mendelssohn passed away in 2002 at the age of 92.
